2009. Kanye keeps calling Marc Jacobs’ office. no response for weeks. finally they get on the phone — hours of talking, art, music, everything. that conversation became the first time a rapper ever designed for a maison.
he named it “Don.” not after himself — after Don C., his tour manager and right hand at the time. the two sister styles got named the same way: “Jasper” after his barber, “Mr. Hudson” after the singer on his label. this wasn’t a marketing exercise. this was Kanye designing shoes for the people actually around him.
the design brief, straight from Ye: japanese pop art and a jacket with an oversized collar from Dune (1984). that’s where the silhouette’s proportions come from.
when it dropped, the sneaker world did NOT agree it was a good idea. purists called it the end of underground culture. blogs compared it to a Reebok. and it still nearly sold out at the launch party.
